Atkins Diet Menu Means Less Carbs

The Atkins diet menu differs from many diets that you may have tried before, and you may think that it sounds to good to be true. All you need to do to lose weight is to start your day with eggs and bacon, eat chunks of cheese, when you need a snack, feast on butter fried steaks and round it off with coffee and cream.

However this is only half the story, because filling yourself with high fat foods needs to be balanced, and the Atkins diet menu does this by excluding most carbs including crisps, bread, chocolate, pasta, cake potatoes, biscuits and rice. In the early stages it even means excluding milk, and some fruit and vegetables.

Atkins Diet

Dr Robert Atkins developed the Atkins Diet, and the theory behind the Atkins diet menu is fairly straightforward. It assumes that cutting out carbs, will force your body to burn its own fat stores in order to provide it with energy. Additionally your body uses up more calories burning fat than carbohydrate, so this mean you will lose weight faster. Lowering your carbohydrate intake also keeps blood sugar levels stable. Consequently you won’t be tempted to snack or overeat.

There are four phases in the Atkins diet menu.  The first needs to be followed for at least two weeks.  In this phase your carbohydrate intake is limited to a mere twenty grams a day. Bearing in mind that we normally eat at least ten times more, this means a dramatic change in your diet.  This is the period where your body moves from burning carbs to burning fats.

The second phase of the Atkins diet menu allows you to introduce a few more vegetables, as you are allowed to slightly increase your carbohydrate intake by five grams a day, until you reach your critical level for losing weight.

The third phase is when you reach a point where you only need to lose another five or ten pounds. The Atkins diet menu allows you to increase your carbohydrate intake by ten grams each day.

In the final phase, lifetime maintenance, you limit your carbs to around ninety grams a day, although this does vary with the individual. You follow this for the rest of your life.
