Weight Control with Coconut Oil
Modern nutrition has mistakenly led us to believe that low-fat diets are healthy and necessary for weight control. For decades we have been told to reduce fat in our diet in order to lose weight, but this is not true for all fats. We are always being told to cut out saturated fats and eat more mono saturated. This is good advice, but again not the full story, as coconut oil is a saturated fat, but not the kind your doctor has warned you about.
In fact studies have shown that natural coconut oil, not the hydrogenated processed type, is highly curative and beneficial for weight control, disease prevention, strengthening the immune system, improving digestion and is also anti-aging.
In his book, “The Coconut Oil Miracle” Bruce Fife, a naturopathic doctor, certified nutritionist and president of the Coconut Research Center, describes the healing properties of coconut oils, and presents a nutrition plan, with fifty delicious recipes, for health and weight control, that allows us all to experience what he calls the “perfect food”.
Coconut oil helps weight control because it is thermogenic, which means it shifts your metabolic rate, so that you burn calories faster, and this is why it is the only dietary fat, which helps you lose weight, as opposed to putting it on. Studies have shown that this calorie burning (thermogenic) effect, not only last for just a couple of hours after eating, but that it can elevate levels of fat burning, for up to twenty-four hours.
Using refined vegetable oils in your diet has a harmful affect on your thyroid, the gland responsible for controlling your metabolism, and so promotes weight gain, therefore substituting coconut oil in your diet is a win, win situation, as it is conducive to weight control and health.
In fact research conducted at the McGill University in Canada has shown that if you replace the soybean, canola and safflower oils in your usual diet with coconut oil, you can lose as much as thirty six pounds of excess fat a year. This is weight control without having to reduce how many calories you eat, “just an oil change”.
